Track & Field Fun: Training for an Inclusive Season of Sports!

This spring, our students are sprinting, jumping, throwing, and rolling into an exciting Track and Field unit that’s all about movement, inclusion, and personal bests! Across all classes, students are actively participating in a range of track and field events designed to build strength, confidence, and a love of physical activity.

Each week, we’ve been exploring and practicing key events that focus on different athletic skills—from speed and coordination to power and endurance. Here’s a look at what we’ve been working on:

🏁 Standing Track Start – Learning how to begin each race with balance, focus, and determination. A solid start sets the tone for success!

🏃‍♀️ 50 Meter & 25 Meter Dash – Practicing short sprints, students are developing speed, agility, and control as they race toward the finish line.

🚶 50 Meter & 25 Meter Walk – These events focus on pacing and stamina, giving students a chance to shine with strong, steady strides.

10 Meter & 25 Meter Wheelchair Races (Manual or Motorized) – Students using manual or motorized wheelchairs are practicing proper starts and safe, powerful movement techniques to build speed and confidence on the track.

🥎 Softball Throw for Distance – This event helps students improve their throwing form, strength, and accuracy as they aim for maximum distance.

🦘 Standing Long Jump – A true test of lower body power and coordination, students are leaping forward with energy and enthusiasm.

🎯 Turbo Javelin for Distance – Using lightweight, safe javelins, students practice proper throwing technique and distance control in this fun and engaging event.

Every activity is adapted and inclusive, giving all students the chance to participate and experience success in their own way. It’s not just about competition—it’s about growth, effort, and celebrating each person’s abilities.

🎉 Special Olympics Bound!

All of this hard work and training is building toward a very special goal: some of our students will be participating in the Somerset County Special Olympics Track Meet this May! This exciting event brings together student-athletes from across the county for a day of celebration, teamwork, and achievement.

For our participating athletes, the meet will be a chance to showcase the skills they’ve practiced, meet peers from other schools, and experience the spirit of sportsmanship and inclusion that the Special Olympics embodies.

💪 On Track for Success

We are so proud of every student’s dedication, progress, and positive attitude throughout this unit. Whether they’re sprinting, walking, rolling, jumping, or throwing, each student is showing what it means to try their best, support one another, and have fun in the process.

On your mark, get set, go!
Get outside, set up a few cones, grab some softballs and mini javelins, and let the games begin. Every champion starts with the basics—and these skills are the perfect place to start.
