Independent Living Spotlight: Building Skills Through Sunflower-Butter and Jelly Sandwich Making

This week, students in Room 510 (Ms. Twilley’s class) visited the Independent Living Kitchen for a hands-on lesson centered on developing everyday life skills. Students practiced making sunflower-butter and jelly sandwiches, an activity that offers a simple but meaningful way to support independence at school and at home.

During the lesson, students moved through each part of the process, including gathering materials, spreading the sunflower butter and jelly, putting the sandwich together, and cleaning up their workspace. Through this activity, students strengthened a variety of functional skills such as following multi-step directions, sequencing and organizing steps, using fine-motor skills, practicing kitchen safety, and independently completing a task from start to finish.

Although making the sandwich was enjoyable, the main goal of the activity was to help students understand and practice the full routine involved in preparing a simple meal. Learning these steps built confidence, independence, and problem-solving abilities that will support them in many daily routines.

We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm students showed during this activity!
