Room 215 and Room 222

Rooms 215 and 222 participated in a hands-on art and sensory activity focused on creating pretend ice cream cones using cotton balls, glue, and colored water.

First, each student selected a paper cone template and used glue to attach multiple cotton balls to the top, representing scoops of ice cream. This step supported fine motor development, particularly pincer grasp, hand strength, and coordination. Students showed careful attention as they applied glue and pressed the cotton balls down securely.

Next, using pipettes filled with colored water, 215 and 222 added “flavors” to their cotton ball scoops—such as pink for strawberry, green for mint, and yellow for banana. This portion of the activity encouraged:

  • Hand-eye coordination and fine motor control while squeezing the pipettes
  • Creative expression through flavor/color choices
  • Scientific observation as they watched the cotton absorb the water and change color

Throughout the activity, 215 and 222 used descriptive language like “squishy,” “drippy,” and “strawberry,” and were able to follow multi-step directions. They remained engaged from start to finish, showing pride in their finished “ice cream” creations.

This multi-sensory experience supported learning in fine motor skills, expressive language, sequencing, and imaginative play, all while having fun with a summer-themed project.
