Technology Career Cluster
As you walk through the hallways of Midland School, you may notice colorful and informative banners adorning the walls. You have the students in the Technology career cluster to thank for these masterpieces! One of the main jobs in this career cluster is creating banners. These banners are displayed on bulletin boards and hallway walls throughout the school to advertise special events such as school dances, Student Council theme days, and monthly nutrition themes promoting good health.
A banner is a long sign that typically features a message accompanied by relevant pictures. When a staff member needs a banner for a bulletin board or special occasion, he/she completes a banner order form, specifying what the banner should say and the types of pictures he/she would like included.
In the Technology career cluster, we aim to please! Giving the customer what they want is important in any job, so carefully following the order form is emphasized. Students learn to use the information provided on the form to design a banner, doing their best to make it both attractive and easy to read.
We use Canva to create our banners. Canva is a free, beginner-friendly online graphic design tool that makes it easy to create banners, signs, labels, and other visual materials. With practice, students become familiar with Canva and learn the steps involved in creating a banner. They make important design decisions, such as which fonts and colors to use for the text and which images—called elements in Canva—to select to enhance the banner. Students also practice resizing and repositioning images to improve the overall appearance of their finished product.
Once completed, the banners are saved and printed on our new large-format plotter printer.
It is truly impressive to watch the Technology career cluster students as they create their banners. Throughout the semester, they become increasingly confident and capable of designing banners with greater independence. And when they see their finished products proudly displayed throughout the school, the smiles on their faces show just how proud they are of their accomplishments!
