The Midland School Student Council recently led a successful soup can collection to support the local community, highlighting the impact of teamwork and generosity. In February, students created and distributed flyers to staff and families to encourage participation. Thanks to this outreach, the drive collected more than 180 cans of soup.

Students in Room 511 played a key role throughout the project. Each morning for two weeks, they visited classrooms and offices to pick up donations and bring them back to be sorted and counted. They carefully organized the cans and prepared each donation by assembling a bag with a spoon and napkin to accompany every can. This hands-on experience allowed students to actively contribute while building independence, responsibility, and collaboration skills.

As part of the process, Student Council members checked each can for dents and verified that all items were within a safe “best by” date. Although only a few cans could not be accepted, the experience provided an important lesson in quality control and attention to detail.

Once the collection was complete, Student Council members took a field trip to deliver the donations to the food pantry at the Raritan Valley Community College Resource Center. While there, students helped stock the shelves with the soup and prepared cutlery bags. They also toured the Resource Center, including the “Free Shop,” where students can access clothing and other essential items during times of need.

The food pantry and its resources are available to students at RVCC at any time, free of charge. This initiative not only supported those in need but also demonstrated how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful impact and strengthen a sense of community among students, staff, and families. Special thanks to Ryleigh Hryc, Resource Center Coordinator at Raritan Valley Community College for her assistance and for leading the tour for our students.
