Routines are a Big Part of Everyone’s Life

Everyone has routines that they follow daily to help them stay organized with their day. The transition classes are learning the importance of following a routine.

Each morning the students in Mrs. Tauscher’s class start their day by signing in to class, unpacking their belongings and getting ready for their day.

When signing in, the students locate their picture and move it to the correct location. Their name is then announced that they are present. The teacher and student will then set up their visual schedule for the day. Here the students locate picture symbols for each activity they have that day. This activity requires scanning of the sheet of activity cards, pulling the card off and then placing it in the correct place on their schedule. They work left to right and sequence the events in the correct order. With repetition, the students begin to complete the activity with greater independence. Their schedule helps them understand what is coming and helps them be prepared for their day.

The transition program offers students job training skills that are both either in school and off site. For the student’s daily schedule that is called going to “work”. On the day that “work” is scheduled, the student leaves the class with a job coach in the morning and returns at lunch. On those days, the student has an additional activity added to their morning routine and that is packing their snack for work. The student has a blue lunch bag with their name on it. They are responsible for getting their bag, getting their snack out of their lunch box and packing for work.

Routines help everyone prepare for their day. In the next few months, the super seniors will work to the best of their ability to complete their morning routine and be prepared for their day.
