In science, Room 506 is learning about solids, liquids, and gases. We started by looking at examples of each state of matter. Liquids take the shape of their container. This gave us an opportunity to use measuring tools. Students measured three individual cups of water and poured them into three different shape containers. Then they learned that each looked different, taking the shape of their container, but were the same amount. Then students were asked to locate and examine solids found around the room. Students found items around the room that we use every day, such as pencils, crayons, books, and markers. Students learned that we cannot change the shape of these items. Gases were demonstrated by filling a balloon with air. Students felt the air come out, listened to the sound while holding the end, and watched it fly as we let it go. Students enjoyed that very much.
Next, we learned about combining liquids and solids to make something new, ice cream. Our experiment involved turning liquids into solids. It also gave us another opportunity to use measuring tools. Students measured liquid ingredients and ice cubes and put them into Ziplock bags. They took turns shaking the bags. Eventually, we observed the liquid ingredients turn into ice cream, a solid. They enjoyed watching the process, but the highlight of this experiment was eating ice cream. Science can be fun!
