Chinese New Year
As part of our current events, students in room 508 read and learned about Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year! Using an online app called GetEpic.com, students read about the holiday. They read about how Chinese New Year is celebrated with foods, fireworks, parades and gifts. They learned that each year a different animal is named for the holiday as a symbol for Chinese New Year.
Students made a paper Happy New Year quilt using different animal symbols, discussed the years associated with the symbols and learned that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. They also searched their birth year to learn the animal associated with the year they were born.
Using our Scholastic magazine, students read about a 12-year-old girl whose family offers programs for kids to learn about Chinese New Year, teaching them traditions like using chopsticks to eat and making yummy foods like dumplings and moon cakes.
During independent living, students learned that Moon Cakes are eaten on Chinese New Year because the holiday is based on the lunar calendar. The treats look similar to the moon and are eaten as a type of celebration of the lunar month. The class followed a recipe to make a simple variation of Moon Cakes and enjoyed them very much. Students reviewed the materials and ingredients they used to make the Moon Cakes and said they would make it again.
