Room 220 is studying geography in social studies and the class illustrated a poem about planet Earth. Students used Google Earth to review what Earth looks like from space. Students learned that the Earth is made up of land, water, and air. The class was shown a bottle of soil, a bottle of water, and an empty bottle to represent the air as visuals for what the Earth is made of.
Next, students placed both of their hands on a globe to identify Earth’s round shape. Following the globe activity, students were shown the world map and it was explained that maps help them in seeing the entire Earth in one image. This map identified each of the seven continents with the use of different colors which helped the students to count the land masses. Students listened to a video song entitled, “7 Continents Song”, on the channel Hopscotch. The song was a review of each of the seven continents and which unique animals originate from each continent. Next, students were introduced to the poem, “I Love the Earth”, from Teachers Pay Teachers contributor, First Class Teacher. The poem describes Earth’s features which include blue skies, green forests, wide oceans, and many animals.
After the poem was read aloud and discussed, students mounted the poem on construction paper and glued down pictures around the poem that illustrated it. After this activity, students listened to the book, Earth-No Place Like Home, by Joyce Markovics. This book complemented our poem activity and was an appropriate ending to our lesson. In the next lesson, we will explore the oceans.
