Instructional Highlights – Room 220

In science Room 220 is learning about liquids and solids. We read the book entitled, Discover Water, by Nadia Higgins from the “Get EPIC” website. Students drink water and wash up with water but never think about where it comes from. In the book students are introduced to how we get water from earth’s atmosphere and the different forms it takes on within our planet. In the first experiment each student held an ice cube in the palm of their hand over a sink. Warm tap water was turned on to gently flow over the ice cube and each student watched as the cube went from a solid to a liquid. This experiment helped students to understand the information shared in the book about how ice, snow, and glaciers provide us with water when they melt. In its melted form students identified water as a liquid and recognized that it does not hold its own shape.  In the book, Solid or Liquid, by Amy Hansen students learned that liquids do not hold their own shape. Students experimented with different shaped bottles and saw that whatever shape the bottle was, round, square or triangular, the liquid took the shape of the container.

Students also recognized that solids hold their own shape and an example of a chair was presented in the book. The class stood up and examined their chairs recognizing the shape of their chair did not change no matter if they turned it upside down or on its side. We then watched a video on the website Brain Pop Jr. on solids, liquids and gases. This site also offers a quiz to test students’ comprehension of the information. The children also enjoyed a cut and paste sorting activity which reinforced the information presented.  These hands-on experiences are not only enjoyable, but they assist students in understanding the information.
