Students in Room 512 have been quite busy this fall! They have been performing a number of jobs to help out around the school.
The Sunshine Committee recently needed help making over 100 little suns…one for each staff member in the school. This job could sound daunting, unless you have the right tools for the job. In 512, the students used the Cricut! First, they chose an appropriate symbol and size. Then, they programmed the Cricut to cut out the suns. They counted the suns to be sure there were enough. The suns then needed to be delivered to all the staff mailboxes on the last day of September, so that the entire staff could participate in an activity involving the suns which they kept and traded! They will soon be helping the Sunshine Committee again by making “Thankful” leaves.
Another project that the students in Room 512 have been working on is making the attendance pads for each classroom. Each day, teachers record attendance on these special pads. Students make copies of the form, cut the sheets into quarters, count out 39 sheets, quality control the sheets, place the sheets together on a cardboard backing, place the sheets into a small vice, and glue the sheets together and wait for the pad to dry. It takes time, but it is an important job. The pads are delivered to the classrooms as needed.
Recently, the Student Council voted on delivering a handmade birthday card to each student in the school on their birthday. Guess who makes the cards? You got it…the students in Room 512 (with some help from the Printing/Card making Career Cluster). Designs are chosen from the Cricut image library which are then cut and pasted onto a card. Students choose a greeting for the inside of the card and stamp it! The cards are made and await delivery by a Student Council member each day someone has a birthday.
Project based work is an integral part of the curriculum for our super seniors. Students need to understand the task and work together to get the job done, step by step, following the processes necessary. They perform quality checks and take pride in a job well done!
