In our first aid unit, classes learned that first aid is the immediate care given to an injured person. Students watched a BrainPop video showing community helpers such as policemen, firemen, paramedics, doctors/nurses. Students learned that these helpers respond to emergencies. An emergency is a serious situation that occurs suddenly and requires a fast response. It involves a person who is in need of immediate help. Next, students completed a Boom Card activity that included identifying whether a situation is an emergency or not.
Students listened to the teacher identify various items in a first aid kit and how each is used. Next, students completed a Boom Card activity where students were given a list of first aid kit items and dragged the corresponding items into the first aid kit.
Students then practiced putting on vinyl disposable gloves, which help keep people safe during emergencies. Classes practiced controlling bleeding by:
● applying direct pressure with a gauze pad on themselves and a partner.
● raising the injured arm above heart level and applying direct pressure to the brachial artery on the upper inside arm.
● applying a band aid on a “cut”.
Together these activities helped students identify an emergency and learn how they can assist if one arises.
