The students in Room 217 are enjoying expanding their alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness using the Learning Without Tears handwriting and reading programs. The Handwriting Without Tears program introduces the character Mat Man who is made using lines and curves which are necessary to form letters. Through a variety of fun and engaging songs such as “Where Do You Start Your Letters” and “Big Line March”, the students learn positional concepts needed to form letters. Aleeah and Destiny like to use the wooden lines and curves to build uppercase letters while following verbal cues such as “down the pole” and “around the curve.”
Each week, students are introduced to an alphabet letter through short stories from the reading program A to Z for Mat Man and Me. Holden enjoys using the adapted books to read the story while Lexi prefers exploring the story props. Gavin’s favorite part is using the recordable speech buttons to identify objects from the book. Ayaan likes using interactive SMARTboard activities such as finding the letters in the text and listening to the story read aloud. During the related phonics lesson, Christian enjoys searching the sensory bin for items that begin with the letter sound. Everyone loves playing the guessing game from Super Simple: Turn and Learn ABCs on the SMARTboard. Using their augmentative devices, recordable buttons, or their voice, the students shout out their guess as to what picture is being slowly revealed to go along with letter sound. Reading is always fun and interactive in Room 217!
