Instructional Highlights – Room 506

Room 506 enjoys choosing healthful snacks and simple meals to prepare in our independent living kitchen lessons. These lessons offer an opportunity to expand student’s language, practice life skills, choose healthful food choices, and give students a sense of independence. While celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday, students decided it would be fun to make green eggs and ham.  Our recipe used spinach leaves instead of food coloring, so we discussed the nutritious value of spinach. We all agreed this would be a better choice.

As we typically do in cooking lessons, students followed a picture recipe. They identified and then gathered the necessary foods and kitchen tools needed. Identifying and retrieving the items in the correct area of the kitchen is an important part of our lesson. In this recipe, we used a blender, measuring tools, an electric griddle, and a spatula. We discussed and reviewed the safety use of electric appliances. Using our math skill, students identified the correct size fractional measuring cup to measure the spinach.

Then students began to follow the steps in our recipe. Each student had an opportunity to crack an egg with their own individual technique, which is always fun. We agreed that using a blender was easier for us when scrambling the eggs. They used the griddle and spatula and placed their serving on the plate. The ham afforded us an opportunity to practice using a knife. Students were asked if they liked green eggs and ham and most all agreed they did.

When the students were finished eating, they cleaned up. This entailed washing their plates, putting silverware in the dishwasher, and cleaning the table and countertops.

Take any opportunity to practice cooking skills at home with your adolescent.  Let them help in the kitchen in whatever manner they can. Food will enhance their motivation, and achieving that feeling of independence and being a helper will also be very satisfying for them.
