Our Story

A lifetime of caring—from preschool through to adulthood
Based in Central NJ, Midland is a NJDOE-approved, non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization that provides a lifelong continuum of services to children, teenagers, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families. We are unique in our ability to accommodate a range of disabilities, and are recognized as a leader in the delivery of services to individuals with the most challenging intellectual and developmental disabilities in Northern and Central New Jersey.
Midland focuses on meeting the academic, social, emotional, career, and life needs of the individuals in our care, offering:
- Highly individualized attention with programming that is flexible and adaptable.
- A dedicated, attentive, enthusiastic, and experienced faculty and staff.
- A track record of helping our students and adults achieve positive outcomes. To some, these outcomes may be reaching their academic and social goals, to others it may be returning to a public school classroom, transitioning to competitive employment in their own community upon graduation, or living independently in one of our supervised residential homes.
Midland supports the families and friends of our students and adults. The depth and breadth of Midland’s experienced staff provides both a wide range of resources and services, and fosters an engaged and welcoming community.
The Midland Organization
Founded in 1960, Midland is a happy, nurturing, supportive, and safe place for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Situated on a beautiful campus in Branchburg, with our residential homes located in the neighboring suburbs, below you will find a brief summary of each of our programs. You can explore our site for more detailed information on these services, our facilities, and more. You can also learn about our history here: 60-year history
Our school’s community is vibrant, supportive, and proactive, with a common purpose: to provide programs of the highest quality to help all of the students reach their highest level of achievement and independence.
Midland has excellent facilities designed to accommodate a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities. We create a safe environment where students are appreciated for who they are, and where they can participate in activities in the same way that their typical peers can in a typical school.
For students aged 3 to 21, our educational services include:
- Preschool Ages 3-5
- School Ages 5-18
- Super Seniors Ages 18-20 Transition Program Age 21 (graduating students)

Offering meaningful choice, enrichment and personal development, Midland Explores is part of a comprehensive set of services and support designed to help our adults reach their highest level of achievement throughout their lives and to become contributing members of their community. Please note, this is skill development, as opposed to adult day care. Our goal is to provide these adults, who are 21 years or older, with the opportunity to explore new activities, further develop skills to help them live successfully, and get to know their community.
Located at the Old York School building in Branchburg, just a few miles from Midland’s main campus, the Midland Explores program operates 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., five (5) days per week.

Our employment services include our campus-based Patricia Murphy work center (sheltered workshop), prevocational, supported employment, competitive employment, and long-term follow along. Our objective is to provide employment supports with an overarching goal of competitive, integrated employment for all individuals. Midland’s hands-on employment training facility is a sheltered workshop, funded through DVRS. Our other employment services are funded through DDD. We have more than 15 local businesses engaged in our job-sampling program.
Midland has been serving individuals in this capacity since the early 1980’s and has become a well-known agency for these services. We receive high marks from both the DDD and DVRS for our programs during audits and annual reviews.

- Nine group homes and four supervised apartments under the Community Care Program licensed by the New Jersey Department of Human Services.
- Unlicensed Apartments under the Supports Program
All of the activities that take place in the typical family home also take place in our Midland group homes. Individuals have responsibility for their own rooms with staff support and are assigned chores in the home. We also provide residents with opportunities for group and individual recreational outings, depending on their interests and preferences. Regular events and gatherings provide the residents and their families, guardians and friends with occasions to network and expand their social horizons.

As part of our fundraising and community-building efforts, the foundation is responsible for organizing our three major annual fundraising events—Move for Midland Sponsored by PVH Corp., Midland Goes to the Movies with PNC, and The Midland Golf Classic.
The Foundation office also manages the volunteer groups that donate their time and talents to indoor (Work Center) and outdoor (Building and Grounds) work– mostly in the fall and spring.
