In Program Center, we started out the school year with the book called There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books, by Lucille Colandro. It’s a spin-off of the book about the old lady who swallowed a fly, (then a spider, then a bird, then a …). The lady in this book keeps coming back for more, even weirder snacks including a pen, a ruler and a folder! What a silly fiction story! It was fun using a prop fashioned out of a box with a picture of the old lady’s head and open mouth on it. The students took turns feeding the old lady small picture cards.
To further reinforce the story, the classes completed a variety of computer activities. A website called Boom Cards required the students to click and drag pictures of the school supplies from the story into the old lady’s mouth and press submit to check their answers. And the website, www.wordwall.net, tested the students’ knowledge of other school supply names. It was no surprise that everyone eagerly took their turn at the SMART Board to complete the requested task.
Some classes used a word processing program called Clicker 7 to type sentences about school supplies. A word bank was provided to create the sentences, for example, “I use scissors to cut paper”, and “I use glue to stick things together”. Others used Microsoft Word, another word processing program, to type a list of the items from the story. They also were required to highlight the text to change its font and color as well as copy and paste a Google image onto their document.
We look forward to getting to know the new faces at Midland and I can’t wait to present many fun lessons to everyone. Happy reading and happy computing from the Program Center!
