Football and snacks are perfect together
Recently, during Super Bowl week, Mrs. Tauscher’s super seniors set up a snack sampling station for the staff. This activity was the end result of a lot of planning and prep work as a team.
The planning for this event started in January. The teacher and class discussed what people like to eat during the super bowl and how people choose what to make. Students made a list of simple snacks and voted on what the group would like to make. They located recipes and created a shopping list. Each student was responsible for their own recipe.
On a recent trip to Costco students were able to observe how to greet people and hand out samples. We role played greeting people and offering a snack to them. We discussed the importance of good hygiene and how to handle food correctly. Students were prompted to know that some people will say yes and some say no and that it was their responsibility to listen to people and act accordingly.
As the day approached, the class went shopping and purchased the ingredients for their snacks. Then we did a trial run, going around the school offering various chip dips.
On the big day, the class was divided into three groups and each group was given one appetizer to do from start to finish.
Each group followed the recipe and worked together to make their appetizer. While they were cooking, they sampled their work, so they would be able to tell staff what it tasted like and what ingredients were in the snack.
Finally, we set up the stations in the hall. The students greeted the different staff and offered them snacks. The staff went down the line as each group stated what appetizer they had and answered any questions. At the end of the line staff were offered copies of the recipes. The students were excellent salespeople, and the staff loved the snacks. Students were so proud of themselves, especially after hearing all of the praise from the staff. Students wanted to know when they could do it all again – a sure sign of a success!
