Large tasks can be overwhelming for a student, but when they are broken down into smaller steps the task seems manageable. The super seniors were given a large task this year of making materials for the teachers. They are making life skills task boxes which have many parts.
When we first received the job, we made a list of the many different steps there were and we realized that if we broke up into teams with a leader for each team, we could get the job finished in an organized manner. The students then listed the teams we would need. They came up with cutting, laminating, velcroing, sorting, assembling and quality control teams. Depending on what is needed, each day a leader is chosen for a team and they would pick 2 coworkers to go with them. The students are exposed to all jobs, so they can help on any team. Once they know what team they are on that day, we go to work. For each job, safety is of high importance. The teacher reviews the correct way to use scissors, where to stand when using the hot laminator and other important safety steps.
In the pictures, Darius and Jillian are assembling and packaging a box for the kit and CJ is cutting out the different cards.
The final step involves inventorying the kits and quality controlling our work. Many times, the students hear the words inventory and QC for quality control. When the kit is fully complete, the class as a group will go through and inventory each box using a sample to make sure we have all the parts. If anything is missing we fix the problem. We discuss the importance of quality control and wanting the teachers to be proud of our work on the finished product.
The super seniors are learning to take pride in their work!
