Instructional Highlights – Room 510

In room 510 we are learning about being kind to others.  We listened to the book “Kindness Makes Me Stronger” by Elizabeth Cole.    After reading the book, we came up with ways that we could be kind to others.  Ideas included complimenting each other, helping each other within the classroom (hanging up a friend’s coat, getting their lunch box, passing out napkins to classmates, picking up something that has dropped, etc.) and using kind words like “please” and “thank you”.

We have incorporated our kindness efforts during our independent living lessons.  During independent living the students have been making and delivering muffins to different departments within the school.  The students made the muffins following picture cues to sequence the steps.  After the muffins were made the students decorated bags and wrote/stamped a “thank you for all you do” note on them.  Next, we delivered them to the group of people they chose to bake for.  So far, our OT/PT and Maintenance departments have received these delicious muffins.  Who will be next?

We then played “kindness” bingo.  The students took turns being the “caller” of the game and reinforced their understanding of kindness acts we can do.  Lastly, we completed a sorting activity utilizing the smartboard of kind vs unkind words we can say to our friends.  At the completion of our lessons the students all received a certificate for “showing random acts of kindness” to each other.

It is a great program that also incorporates math and fantastic facts.  This story discusses what occurs before, during and after the race, so in math, time concepts were explored on three different levels.

Since this story involves a race between the hare and the tortoise, students learned all about the muscles each animal has and why the hare runs so fast and the tortoise walks so slowly.  We look forward to seeing what our next thematic unit will be!
