Stop! Exit! Yield! Do Not Enter! These are just some of the Safety Signs in the community that the students in Room 510 are learning this semester. To start this social studies unit, Ms. Twilley showed the class a Brainpopjr.com video lesson about safety signs. This website employs an engaging way to introduce a variety of subjects in science, social studies and other subject matter. Through the conversations of the two main characters, Annie and Moby, the students were introduced to safety signs that they see in the community. After viewing the video, the students interacted with the SMART board to answer questions.
Next, the class walked around the school building locating signs. They found a few, including “Exit”, “Restroom” and “Fire” within a few minutes into the tour.
Back in the classroom, students worked independently to complete their booklets, “Safety Signs in Our Community” by spedtacularASD by matching the sign pictures and pasting them onto the correct page after reading the definition of the sign.
So, the next time you are out and about with your child, have them point out any signs they see. Ask them what the sign says and what that means. We will continue to learn more signs as the year goes on!
The pictures show Saqueo finding the “Exit” sign. Ashley was quick to find the “Restroom” sign. A group of students located the “fire” sign, which they were aware of already as it alerts them when there is a fire drill.
Great job room 510!
