Students in room 508 were excited to begin their first cooking activity during Independent Living. We started with a lesson about Johnny Appleseed. After reading a short story about Johnny Appleseed, whose actual name was John Chapman, and answering questions about his life, students washed their hands and put on aprons. Then each student was given an assignment of locating items in the kitchen, like a measuring cup, a measuring spoon, a potato masher, an apple peeler, a cutting board, a pot with a lid, sugar, a bowl, etc.
Following a simple visual recipe, students took turns peeling apples, squeezing the lemon for lemon juice, measuring the cinnamon and sugar and adding ingredients to the pot. Math skills were incorporated to measure both solid and liquid ingredients needed for the recipe.
While the apples were cooking, students participated in a cut and paste activity. Given a variety of pictures, students chose pictures to answer questions such as, which materials did you use, which ingredients did you use, how did it taste, and would you make it again? Students had the opportunity to enjoy the finished product during their lunch time.
Jordan is measuring the sugar, Kimo is pouring the lemon juice into the pot and Nicholas mashed the cooked apples once they were done.
