Instructional Highlights – Room 217

The students in Room 217 have been learning about different types
of weather for our final science unit. Two of our favorite stories and
activities were about wind and clouds. After listening to the story The Wind
Blew by Pat Hutchins, it was time to investigate moving air. First, the
students worked together using a hand held fan to feel moving air on their
hands just like feeling the wind blow. Then it was time to participate in an
experiment to observe which classroom items could be moved by the wind.
Students took turns using the blow dryer to simulate the wind in an attempt
to blow an item across the table. First, we used the low setting on the fan to
make a gentle breeze. Then we used the high setting to make a big gust of
wind! Our discovery was that the stronger the wind, the more the items
moved.

After listening to and interacting with the story Little Cloud by Eric
Carle, the students made puffy paint clouds in a variety of shapes. To make
the puffy paint, we mixed shaving cream and liquid glue. Using a stencil
and paint brush, the students painted the clouds using an up and down
motion to make them puffy while listening to our favorite song Cloud
Shapes by The Treebees on YouTube. We then used our clouds to make
our hallway bulletin board.
