Program Center- The Color RED
While learning about the Chinese New Year during program center lessons, we noticed that many things in the Chinese culture are red… the Chinese flag is red, the envelopes filled with money for gifts are red, and the lanterns hung up for festivals are red! Red is thought to be a lucky color resulting in good fortune.
To learn about the color red, the students completed computer lessons featuring that color.
The pre-school class practiced clicking-and-dragging for a SMART Notebook activity where they had to place a red item in a red box (click-and-drag). They did a wonderful job putting an apple, Elmo, a heart, a strawberry, and a fire truck in red boxes. Clicking-and-dragging to a given target is an important computer skill to acquire, and this lesson provided our youngest students an opportunity to develop it.
Other classes were required to use keyboarding skills to type a list of 10 red items. The students came up with clever lists of red things including watermelon, stop sign, red pepper, ladybug, and cherries. They were instructed to highlight their list to change the color of the text to red and to also change the font. Finally, they had to number their list by clicking on the Numbering icon on the tool bar at the top. The students were delighted to see the numbers 1-10 appear on their document.
The website www.starfall.com was presented on the computer and the iPad to further teach about the color red. Starfall is a well-loved program that encourages students to explore and learn many basic skills. The students practiced clicking on large targets to see and hear the word red in isolation as well as in short phrases on the screen. The bright, colorful animation that appeared with each click encouraged close attention by the students. They really enjoyed navigating the website.
A final red theme lesson was presented on the SMART Board with a SMART Notebook activity. Since this year is the Year of the Rabbit for the Chinese New Year, the students used the crayon tool to “color in” a line drawing of a rabbit. The students quickly learned that a clicking-and-dragging motion done with their finger or a pointer resulted in a red line. They skillfully colored the rabbit and used the eraser tool if they went outside the lines.
It was lots of fun learning about the color red while practicing a number of computer skills.
Don’t forget to wear the color red on Valentine’s Day. Who knows, it may bring you good luck!!!!!!!!!
