Health Instructional Highlights April 2023
Classes are learning about different systems of the human body. The skeletal system is made up of bones. After viewing videos about bones and joints, students learned that bones:
- give structure to their bodies
- allow people to stand and sit
- help us move in many ways
- protect our internal organs.
Students were handed models of bones that they could see and touch. They were able to see a hand, forearm (radius bone), an upper arm bone (humerus), a neck vertebrate and a leg bone.
Students identified various joints in our bodies that help us to move better too. Examples of joints include the elbow and knee.
Next, students engaged in some movement exercises. After each movement, students were asked to point or identify what bones and joints they used to show these movements.
- Students moved their head from side to side (neck)
- Students clapped their hands (fingers, hands, wrists, elbows, arms)
- Students tapped their foot on the floor (foot, ankle, knee, leg)
The lesson continued with classes completing a WordWall activity on the smartboard. Students took turns labeling a skeleton by dragging the label to the corresponding bone. Finally, students worked together to complete a skeletal system puzzle.
