In the 500 wing Health classes, students recently completed a two-week unit on emotions. Emotions are the way we feel. No one can know what I think or how I feel unless I tell or show him or her. My thoughts and feelings are important. Other people have feelings too. You cannot see, smell, or touch feelings but you can touch words of feelings. We can identify how someone feels by recognizing the expression on the person’s face. Students were dealt several emotion photo cards. When a feeling was displayed on the smartboard, students with that emotion card raised their hand, picked up, or pointed to the card. The table below shows visual characteristics related to the feeling or emotion displayed in the card.
HAPPY Smiling face Eyes open wide Clasping hands together Jumping up and down Laughing | ANGRY Red in face Hands on hips Glaring, hands in fists Jaw clenched Veins popping | SAD Tears in eyes Trembling lips Hanging head Shoulders Drooped Frowning Dragging feet |
After viewing a YouTube Video titles “Feelings | Talking Flashcards,” students brainstormed and built a Feelings Word Wall. Four Large post-it pages were hung up around the room entitled:
Words that tell I feel happy
Words that tell I feel angry
Words that tell I feel sad
In this activity, students brainstormed what someone would say or sound like if he/she were exhibiting the same emotion.
In a concluding activity, students completed the Feelings Thermometer activity. Students cut out pictures of activities that would help them when they felt calm, happy, nervous, sad or angry. Next, students glued them to their feelings thermometer. The thermometer later could show students activities they could use to cope when they felt the mentioned feelings/emotions.
