Super seniors make a great team!
Being a super senior is a big step for a student at The Midland School. It means the student has moved into the next phase of the program which focuses on their transition from school to the community. In this program, we develop their pragmatic academics and job skills.
Mrs. Tauscher’s super seniors have begun working on assignments demonstrating and encouraging good first impressions and becoming more independent. They discuss personal hygiene, self- advocacy and teamwork. Our tasks can feel overwhelming, so they are broken down into simpler steps. With repetition, students become more confident in their abilities and it all can become second nature. They complete many jobs as a team, so they are guided to work as a team player.
One assignment the group completed as a team was the annual alumni mailing. This task was broken down into many steps to accommodate all abilities. First, a few of the students collated all the pages of the mailing in an assembly line and then a few others folded the pages using a tri-fold jig. Those papers were them given to another group to stuff into the envelopes. During this phase, the students also learned an important lesson; they may need to wait for someone in front of them or for someone to finish their task. They are prompted to show patience and to use encouraging words toward their co-workers.
Once those steps were completed, each student was given the chance to seal the envelope with a glue stick. Finally, the students labeled the envelopes and bundled them into groups of 10. The class as a group counted up all the envelopes and they completed a total of over 350 mailings. The final product was delivered to the office for mailing. The students were very patient and encouraging to each other. They took great pride in their work and when everything worked out it was a great feeling!
