Students in Room 512 went on a Scavenger Hunt! We’ve been working in the Midland grocery store, the 9-3 Market, to learn about purchasing items in a grocery store. Students learned about the different departments and what items can be found in each. Next, the students were challenged with a scavenger hunt! This was a two-part scavenger hunt – students had to find an item on the shelf and an item in a sales flyer. To make things even more challenging, rather than telling students what item to find, Mrs. Giorello described the items to them. For instance, when asked to find something that smells good, Elaina found shampoo in the store and flowers in the flyer. When asked to find something to eat, Thomas found Cheez-its in the store and was lucky enough to find them again in the flyer…he must really like Cheez-its.
Students scoured the sales flyer to find products that fit the written descriptions. Students cut out pictures and placed them on the scavenger sheet. They had to find something for a pet, something frozen, something for dessert, something that smells good, something for breakfast, something used for cleaning, something to drink and something to eat. No two lists were the same. The students found unique items for each of these!
The next time you take your child to the grocery store, challenge them to not just find an item, but have them locate an item with a specific use or description. They may surprise you!
