Instructional Highlights – Super Seniors

Being a super senior is a big step for a student at Midland School. It means they have moved into the next phase of our program, focusing on transition skills from school to the community.

Mrs. Tauscher’s super seniors have begun working on assignments demonstrating and encouraging good first impressions and becoming more independent. They discuss personal hygiene, self- advocacy and teamwork.   Our tasks can involve many steps. Each student works to become a more independent individual while still working cooperatively as part of a team.

One of the first assignments the group completed as a team was an assembly line activity.  We set up the supplies for filling bags for the annual golf outing.  The class discussed the best set up so the task would run smoothly.  We then set up tables, stocked the different items and taped boxes for the finished product.

When we began the assembly line, some students were given the job of placing one or two items into each bag.  Other students moved along the line with the bags and made sure one item from each group was placed in the bag.  Another student assisted with checking each of the bags and counted the finished product.   The final step was quality controlling our work and getting a total count of all the bags.  We boxed them up and tallied the final count.

The students were very patient and encouraged each other while working.  It was a great start for the year.

The super seniors are looking forward to expanding their skills and completing many more task as a team.
